Nature of the Medium

In this “modified choice” art project (Douglas & Jaquith, p.12) , I told my 3rd and 4th grade students they could make anything that they could imagine out of recycled materials. But first, I spoke to them about the nature of the medium. Here are some things that I told my students to consider:

  • What kind of 3-dimensional shapes would you need to bring your idea to life?
  • What is the given shape of the recycled object?
  • What is a logical way to use that shape?
  • What is the object made out of and how can it be changed or manipulated?  (Cardboard can be cut, bent, & punctured, whereas heavy plastic cannot.)
